What is the fascination with airborne photography? Why can’t we help ourselves? Often seen in parody as a “common white girl” thing, I have seen men and woman of all ages and races subject to such activity. Anyone lucky enough to be graced with the window seat on an airplane has been tempted to snap a pic of what lies just beyond the small glass window.
While these pictures have been taken ten times over, the need to capture that moment remains overwhelming. Whether or not the picture goes up on social media is your prerogative, but that type of photography holds a certain weight. It is the sense of something new, where are you going? Where have you been? It is the intensity that our little human body has been lifted to such heights to where a city is but a mere cluster of specks. It is the idea of luxury, how lucky are we to be flying and where to…. A vacation, a new job? It is the change of perspective that refreshes us.
Flying is a miraculous feat, but seeing the world you live in every day from a new viewpoint sparks curiosity and excitement. Thanks to Apple I am now able to track where in the world my photo was taken. I know that the city of lights I saw from above with a river to its right is in fact Kearny, NJ.
Kearny, you gave me a wonderful jolt of energy soon after the plane took off promptly at 3:15 in the morning. Thank you and keep taking pictures of the wing of your plane because what lies underneath is unapologetically captivating.
