Mauerpark Flohmarkt

Mauerpark Flohmarkt

When in Berlin, go to Mauerpark. Always go to Mauerpark on a Sunday.

Tucked away, above Mitte, lies a flea market I heard whispers about in the hostel lobby. After an upsetting tour at Checkpoint Charlie (the other parts of the tour were MUCH better) and experiencing my first gypsy, I walked into the park and my first sight was two young girls getting a trim while standing up. That was definitely not normal and at that point I knew I was walking into something extraordinary.

Post hair cut people, I was amidst a series of tiny performances. The lawn to my right was peppered with people listening to the performers on my left. This was a soft entry into the karaoke arena I was unknowingly being drawn to.

The karaoke scene remains a top moment in my entire life. I watched hours of karaoke (or so it seemed) from incredible performers to a woman who stripped down to as much as a PG movie would let her while singing Brittany’s “… One More Time.” I wish I could replay those performances daily as the happiness of the performers and the excitement of the crowd intoxicated me. It was hard to peel me from that scene, but once I was finally free, there was still so much to see. Little did I know, this was only the festival side of the flea market and just on the other end was actual flea market with vendors and goods and produce. Sadly I was too busy shopping to take pictures in the market, but that just leaves your mind to fill in the wondrous gap and hopefully you too will experience the wild joys of a Sunday in Mauerpark.
